Vultures are Lovebirds Biography

Vultures are Lovebirds now appears to be ready for the proverbial "big time."

Formed in 1996, VAL Features a powerful combination of post-new wave soul, heartfelt angst, and introspective lyrics that get your mind (as well as your feet) moving. Think Radiohead and The Cure with a touch of Counting Crows and a dash of motown. Not only a treat for the ears, but visually appealing as well, VAL is renowned for their live shows and loyal fanbase. They have played some of Chicago’s finest venues such as Schubas, Elbo Room, and Beat Kitchen to name a few.

2003 brought their first full-length, independently produced CD. UP THE LOVE is packed with stories of longing and realization.  Modern music is searching for a voice. Vultures are Lovebirds are ready.

SOMETIMES BANDS COME ALONG THAT ARE TAILOR MADE FOR A CERTAIN RADIO FORMAT. SUCH IS THE CASE WITH CHICAGO'S
VULTURES ARE LOVEBIRDS, WHO FIT COLLEGE ROCK TO A TEE, ESPECIALLY THOSE COLLEGE STATIONS THAT FOCUS ON
EMO-TINGED MODERN ROCK. UP THE LOVE IS A COLLECTION OF SONGS THAT BALANCES STRONG POP MELODIES AND
HARMONIES WITH SWIRLING GUITARS AND JUMPING BASS LINES. THERE IS A RETRO CURE-LIKE FLAVOR TO SOME OF IT,
AS WELL AS THE INTELLIGENT ARRANGEMENTS OF A THIRD EYE BLIND OR U2.
- FreakShow, SOUTHOFMAINSTREAM.com

"Vultures are Lovebirds, intentionally or otherwise, are on the edge of an insurgent eighties alternative pop revival which has been threatening to emerge ever since the 1980’s ended. Their dark guitar and keyboard atmospheres, and their slick basslines recall English alternative bands like (early) James, the Cure and Gene Loves Jezebel. This is blended with the sensibility of 1990’s Mix 101.9-FM alterna-adult pop, mirroring the softer ethos of undark Midwest suburban bands like the Goo Goo Dolls and Toad the Wet Sprocket"
- Darryl Cater, Chicagogigs.com

"with influences such as Robert Smith of the Cure and beat writer William Burroughs, (Rick) Skowyra's music makes a lot of sense. It's introspective, melodic, catchy and moody."
- Centerstage Chicago

"jumpy, lush, alternative rock ... a nice package that would fit well on college or mainstream radio"
- Jim Esch - Orange Street Press

"I'm a huge fan of the music that works its way to an emotional peak... There are only so many bands that can really do that"
- Jeremy Heerdt - LOCAL CHAOS - FM89.1 WONC
